The 1998 Boston Steinway Piano

The United Church has acquired a 1998 Boston Steinway grand piano from Marcus Roberts and Co, Oxford.  At 7’1” long, it can be classified as a small concert grand piano.

Boston is the brand name of Kawai, prestigious piano makers of Japan. The piano has been designed by Steinway, i.e. the shape of the piano, the Steinway soundboard, the inner moulding, and design of the key action, including the pear-shaped Steinway hammers.  The manufacture is by Kawai.

A series of piano recitals and concerts have been planned by the United Church to showcase this piano. The recitals and concerts are partly to raise funding for the purchase of the piano, but equally importantly, to publicise free access to this piano by all ages and abilities. It is a particular joy to see children ‘having a go’ on what amounts to a concert grand piano. It is hoped that this will inspire a love of the piano and piano playing across all ages.
